Epsom Salts

Imagine this: you come home after a long, hard work’s day, light some candles, grab a vase of freshly cut flowers and head to the bathtub for a nice relaxing escape. At first, this may feel like a waste of precious time; but, what if we told you it could actually (if done correctly) do WONDERS for your menopause symptoms?

Magnesium is a very important nutrient during the menopause, being essential for bone health, nerve function, mood swings, and depression.

The key is Epsom salts, which are little magnesium crystals that melt in your bathtub. The powers of Epsom salts are plentiful. Firstly, because it’s made from magnesium, you can get a great amount of magnesium without having to take supplements or change your diet! Magnesium is a very important nutrient during the menopause, being essential for bone health, nerve function, mood swings, and depression. However, it’s not the easiest to find in food (unless you eat a lot of spinach and swiss chard). Fortunately, magnesium can be absorbed through the skin in warm water. If you suffer from symptoms like osteoporosis, mood swings, depression, electric shock, and tingling extremities, a magnesium-rich Epsom salt bath a few times a week can help get the dosage you need!

Next, it’s great to reduce inflammation and pain, particularly in your joints and muscles. During the menopause, your bones will become weaker, and your muscles will be tighter. But the warmth from the bath mixed with the anti-inflammatory effects of the salt goes straight to the root of the problem. You can try all the ‘sore muscle’ creams and balms on the market, but there’s nothing more effective at relaxing your muscles than a good Epsom salt bath.

When you increase your magnesium levels, your serotonin levels also increase, which is a ‘happy’ hormone.

Finally, it’s the perfect stress reliever. Not only because a few candles and a bit of smooth jazz or Michael Bublé (or whatever tickles your musical fancy) can calm you down, but because the magnesium is directly linked to stress. When your body is low on magnesium, it increases your adrenaline levels (which makes you feel more anxious, more rushed, more worried, more and frantic). When you increase your magnesium levels, your serotonin levels also increase, which is a ‘happy’ hormone. So, the soothing effects of Epsom salt baths aren’t just fluffy nonsense – it’s science.

Have we convinced you to give it a go? If so, follow these steps:

  1. Choose your salt, which comes in different scents. If you’re having trouble sleeping, we recommend a lavender scented salt, which can help relax you even more for bed!
  2. Run a warm (not steaming hot) bath
  3. While water is running, pour in 2-3 cups of salt
  4. Soak for at least 15 minutes, a few times a week. Enjoy!

Finally, if this all sounds good to you, but you just don’t have the time or patience for a bath, you can try making an Epsom salt shower paste! All you need is about ¼ cup of organic olive oil (about 60 ml) and enough salt give the consistency you want. Use it as a scrub in the shower.
