CBD Oil is particularly beneficial for anxiety, joint pain, insomnia, and general wellbeing – but how does it work?
Firstly, as highlighted in our article What Is CBD Oil, CBD Oil is a non-intoxicating oil extracted from industrial hemp or cannabis. The cannabis plant produces hundreds of chemicals, one of them being cannabidiol, also known as CBD. Because it contains very little to no THC (another chemical in cannabis), it does not give you a ‘high’ feeling. While that’s simple enough, how it exactly helps with anxiety and joint pain is a little bit more complicated.
Since CBD directly activates this receptor, it follows that CBD has direct effects on anxiety and the rest.
To start with, CBD oil is thought to activate a serotonin receptor (the 5-HT1A serotonin receptor), which is why it has anti-anxiety effects. In more basic terms, a receptor is a tiny protein attached to your cells that receives chemical signals and helps your cells respond to them, and serotonin is a neurotransmitter that contributes to happy feelings and well-being. So, activating a serotonin receptor would allow your brain to more easily respond to the ‘happy’ chemical serotonin. This receptor is involved in many processes, including regulating anxiety, addiction, sleep, and pain. Since CBD directly activates this receptor, it follows that CBD has direct effects on anxiety and the rest.
Furthermore, CBD is believed to stop the body from absorbing a compound called anandamide, which is associated with regulating pain. This mean that more anandamide stays in the body, which can reduce the amount of pain a person feels. As such, your joint pain and body aches would reduce. It’s also thought to limit inflammation in the brain and nervous system, which similarly can help reduce body pains.

Researchers believe that CBD interacts with certain receptors and chemicals in the brain, and this interaction can (in the long-run) reduce pain, help you sleep better, and make you feel happier and less anxious. The exact science behind how it works in the brain is still ongoing, so it’s not entirely clear how it does what it does. However, it has been marked as safe by the World Health Organisation and is unassociated with any negative health effects, and many studies have time and time again found positive results on anxiety, sleep, and pain reduction. Fortunately, CBD is being better understood in time and the positive effects it has keep proving themselves.
