On this article I will be addressing the behind-the-scenes that led to the creation of Blossom Balm, which is my vaginal moisturiser. It is a gel that nurtures and lubricates intimate tissues, aiming to keep them healthy throughout the day. It doesn’t have any fragrance since products you use for intimate areas should not have any sort of perfume. It is very gentle on the skin and made with top quality ingredients. It differs from the lubricants since it prevents vaginal dryness, which as you know is very common during the menopause. Moreover, its unique combination of ingredients helps keeping vaginal pH balanced to avoid bacterial infection.
Rose Water (Rosa Damascena Flower Water): Since ancient times roses have symbolised femininity and purity. In fact, they are not just pretty looking flowers. Due to their many therapeutic benefits roses are widely used in the cosmetic industry. The distillate of Rose Damascena (which is also known as rose water) is able to reduce inflammation, mostly by suppressing the growth of certain types of bacteria. Rose Damascena is also known for its mild astringent properties, therefore can be used as a toner for oily skin, prone to acne. Rose water works also as a skin refresher, without stripping off its natural oils (a usual problem with alcohol-based toners). This extract presents excellent moisturising properties and therefore Rose Water is present in the ingredients lists of many facial serums and toners designed to provide a boost of hydration. If applied topically, rose water is able to instantly refresh your complexion. Rose oil and rose distillate are both rich in antioxidants – which are molecules that protect the cells from oxidative stress, therefore helping your skin to stay youthful and healthy. Rose water is also rich in vitamins and minerals that play a key role in the synthesis of collagen and elastin, both useful in our vagina during menopause. On top of all those properties, the fantastic scent of roses relaxes the mind and is able reduces anxiety – another reason to love roses!
Marshmallow root (Althea Officinalis Root Extract): It’s a plant with high content in starch and mucilagenous polysaccharides which form a protective gel, along with flavonoids and anthocyanidins. Marshmallow root is rich in asparagine, pectin, starch, mineral salts, and vitamins (A, C, E and B complex), basically all good stuff. It forms a protective layer that, over the mucous membranes and skin, is able to effectively soothe irritation and relieve inflammation. The root of Marshmallow can also promote generation of tissue fluid and increase moisture in deficient skin conditions. Marshmallow is widely used in cosmetics for its soothing, moistening, and calming properties on the skin. To summarize, it provides effective soothing, anti-irritant and moisturizing properties and this is the reason why it is in my Blossom Balm. If you have irritation down there it will help to soothe. It will also help vaginal dryness as it also has moistening properties.
Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract): is a medicinal plant of desert origins commonly used as a home-made remedy for burns and it is widely used in beauty and skin care products. From a botanic point of view, aloe is a leafy succulent. It’s a type of plant that has adapted to extreme desert conditions, by storing water in its leaves. In aloe’s case, the water is stored in the gel-like sap. You can use the sap topically directly from the leaf – it is enough to slit it open and then squeeze. Aloe vera shows anti-inflammatory properties that also make it suitable for the treatment of some skin conditions such as psoriasis and herpes outbreaks, and also minor skin irritations such as wind burn and razor burn. It is possible to use it as a preventive treatment, for example before shaving or going outside in the wind or sun; however, you cannot use it as a substitute for sunscreen. Aloe Vera has been chosen to be part of this formulation for all of the above but also because it contributes for the refreshing sensation and alleviates irritation, very important if you are suffering of vaginal dryness.
