Apple Cider Vinegar

For women who can’t or choose not to use HRT (or for those who want every little bit of remedy they can get)…

…finding easy, home treatments for menopausal symptoms can sometimes be difficult. We always talk about how important nutrition is to keep symptoms under control, but it can be hard to know where to start and what really works, especially if you have dietary restrictions. A little-known natural remedy for menopausal symptoms (which is cheap and effective!) is apple cider vinegar.

Benefits

Apple cider vinegar has many health benefits and is really great at tackling the menopause. For one, it’s a natural antioxidant packed with enzymes and ‘friendly’ bacteria, so it flushes out your body’s toxins and helps maintain your body’s natural functions such as your digestive system. This means you’ll feel cleaner, leaner, and less bloated.

Second, because vinegar alkalinises the body, it can help with hot flushes, night sweats, and headaches! Next, it contains magnesium, a mineral that’s incredibly important not only for supporting and maintaining bone mass (necessary to prevent osteoporosis), but also for promoting nerve function, and lowering mood swings and depression.

Finally, if that’s not enough, apple cider vinegar can help reduce sugar cravings. The components of apple cider vinegar help moderate blood sugar levels, and more controlled blood sugar levels means you’re less likely to crave sweet things! The taste of apple cider vinegar’s tartness on your tongue will also snap your brain away from wanting sugar. Naturally, with less sugar cravings, you’re less likely to consume sugar, which can lead to weight loss and an overall healthier life.

How much should you consume, and when?

While there’s no exact right amount or time to take it, it’s generally recommended to take 2 tablespoons a day, whenever you’d like (though many women find it best to take in the morning, before breakfast). Because or it’s tartness and tangy taste (which, admittedly, isn’t the best), it’s usually not consumed completely on its own. You can mix it in with water, follow it with honey or fruit, or even use it as a salad dressing! If you do want to mix it with water (which may be the easiest option), one glass of filtered or spring water should do the trick! If you’re finding it too strong for you, start by taking one tablespoon a day and working your way up to 2. Be sure to get raw, unfiltered, organic apple cider vinegar, which will maximise all the benefits! It’s such a simple, cheap, and low-calorie way to help manage your symptoms, and it’s incredible for your overall health too.

It can be difficult and tiresome to find effective alternative treatments to hormone replacement therapy (HRT), and it’s not always convenient to take a handful of supplements every day. The beauty of apple cider vinegar is that it’s been shown in countless studies to have a real effect on weight loss, digestion, cravings, hot flushes, night sweats, and so much more, and it just needs to be mixed into a glass of water a day!
